Here's a cute festive outfit for your fave mug! A perfect Secret Santa gift!
You will need small amounts of:
- red aran weight yarn (to make the basic wrap and coaster)
- DK yarns in white/sparkly white and black, plus a small amount of silver or gold (for the buckle)
- a 5mm hook and a 3.75mm hook
- press fastener
- sewing needle and black thread
- 2 stitch markers
- small pom pom maker (optional)
Step 1: Make the basic coaster and mug wrap in red yarn - see pattern. (TIP: At the moment this pattern is FREE when you subscribe to my newsletter emails).

Step 2: Add the trim to the coaster as instructed in the pattern - in a white or sparkly white yarn.
Step 3: Using a 3.75mm hook join the white yarn to the ch-1 of Round 4 (RS) (at the top of the wrap), *(ch1, 1dc), rep across, ending with the last shell on the top, fasten off. Turn wrap 180 degrees and repeat for the bottom row of shells.

Step 4: With the black yarn and 5mm hook, make a length of foundation half treble to fit firmly around the centre of your mug, plus approximately 2cm. If you prefer, make a length of chain and a row of htr instead.

Step 5: Add stitch markers in row 2 of the wrap - to the 12th stitch from either end - include the sides with the 2dc in your counting.

Step 6: Make the buckle - with 3.75mm hook join the silver (or gold) yarn in the first of the marked stitches, 3dc into this st, 3dc into the bar above (or below, if left handed) - see pic, 3dc into the 13th st, finishing with 3dc into the remaining bar, fasten off. Repeat for remaining marked stitch.

Step 7: Finish off by feeding the belt through the stitches either side of each buckle (you will see the belt appear inside the buckle). Sew the press fastener onto the ends of the belt with the black thread and needle, checking the snugness of fit on the mug. The press fastener side fits inside the handle.

Step 8: Add chocolates or sachets of tea and wrap your gift with love!
Oh - don't forget.......The Santa hat!
(Note - to make a popcorn: make 3 tr into st, take hook out of loop, hook into side of 1st tr, pull loop through, ch1.)
Make a ml with the red yarn and 5mm hook.
R1 - ch3 (counts as 1st tr, throughout), 7 tr into ml, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (8sts)
R2 - ch3, *(2tr in next st, 1tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (12 sts)
R3 - ch3, 1tr, *(2tr in next st, 2tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (16 sts)
R4 - ch3, 2tr, *(2tr in next st, 3tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (20 sts)
R5 - ch3, 3tr, *(2tr in next st, 4tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (24 sts)
R6 - ch3, 4tr, *(2tr in next st, 5tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (28 sts)
R7 - ch3, 5tr, *(2tr in next st, 6tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (32 sts)
R8 - ch3, 6tr, *(2tr in next st, 7tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (36 sts)
R9 - ch3, 7tr, *(2tr in next st, 8tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round. (40 sts)
R10 - ch3, 8tr, *(2tr in next st, 9tr), rep * two more times, 2tr in last st, join with ss to third ch at beg of round, fasten off. (44 sts)
R11 - Join white yarn in any st and with 3.75mm hook, ch1, *(1dc, 1 popcorn in next st)., rep * 21 more times, ss to 1st dc, fasten off. (22 dc, 22 popcorns).
Make a small pompom in the white yarn, attach to top of hat, weave in all ends.
Attach hat to mug!
